ARTIST STATEMENT

Mateo Monje Shefford

My background comes from my undergraduate studies in Sound Design which has found further exploration in the expansive field of the MA Digital Arts at Greenwich.  While still heavily implementing sound into my works, I have recently been working with the game engine Unity to create 3D environments, which are recorded to video and processed further with video editing software.

A constant theme has been representing the unnatural, whilst combating the idea that nothing can be unnatural. It is from this standpoint that works are produced that mimic what we believe as unnatural, unreal, and factually impossible in reality. A background in audio has pushed the immersion of these perceived realities by being able to create fictitious sonic spaces for these artificial digital artefacts to exist within, often by using elements of synchronization to enhance the relationship between the viewer and the image - bridging the unoccupied area with noise.

FACTITIA is the final realisation behind a series of works that goes beyond basic programming techniques, editing and composition. It trajects an aesthetic comprised of over a year's worth of research, debate and experimentation. The title of the work is representative of the Latin word for artificial - contrasting the modern meaning with the meaning it held when it was originally coined. What artificial means to us now will change in the future.

Stills from FACTITIA will be auctioned on OpenSea as non-fungible tokens (NFT) once the initial exhibition has concluded.
